Key takeaways

  • GEO is the practice of getting your content selected as a source by generative search features such as Google AI Overviews.
  • Cited passages are short, direct, evidenced and attributable to a clear entity.
  • Most cited pages already rank in the top ten, so classic SEO remains the entry ticket.
  • Measure citation share per query set, monthly, against named competitors.

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the practice of making your content the source that generative search features cite when they compose an answer. Where classic SEO competes for a position in a list, GEO competes for inclusion in the answer itself, most visibly in Google AI Overviews and AI Mode.

This guide covers how those systems select sources, what cited pages have in common, a practical GEO checklist, and how to measure progress. It is based on the citation analysis we run for clients every month.

How generative search selects sources

Google has described AI Overviews as being grounded in its core ranking systems. In practice the process has three stages.

  1. Retrieval. The system pulls candidate pages, mostly from those that already rank well for the query and closely related queries.
  2. Passage selection. From those pages it extracts passages that directly address the question and can stand alone.
  3. Synthesis and citation. It composes an answer and links the passages it relied on.

Two implications follow. You need to be retrievable, which means ranking or being closely associated with pages that rank. And you need passages worth selecting, which is where most sites fall short.

What cited pages have in common

When we compare pages Google cites against pages that rank but are not cited, five traits recur.

A direct answer near the top

The cited passage usually sits in the first two paragraphs under a heading that mirrors the query. It states the answer in one or two sentences before elaborating.

Evidence a model can attribute

Numbers, dates, named sources and clear definitions make a passage safe to quote. Assertions without support are used less, even from pages that rank higher.

Clear entity signals

The page and site make it obvious who is speaking and why they are qualified: author bios, organisation schema, consistent naming across the web and links to the same entity from other sites.

Structure that mirrors the question

Question-shaped headings, short definitional sentences, tables and lists map cleanly onto how an Overview is assembled.

Freshness where it matters

For topics that change, a visible updated date and current data improve selection. For evergreen definitions it matters less.

The GEO checklist

Page level

  • Open with a one-paragraph answer that could be quoted verbatim.
  • Use a heading hierarchy in which each H2 is a question or a claim.
  • Include at least one table, list or definition per major section.
  • Support key claims with a number, a date or a named source.
  • Add an FAQ section that answers adjacent questions in two to three sentences each.
  • Mark up the page with Article or BlogPosting, FAQPage and BreadcrumbList schema. Our free schema markup generator produces the JSON-LD.

Site level

  • Publish Organization schema with sameAs links to your official profiles.
  • Give every author a page with credentials and Person schema.
  • Allow Google-Extended and the major AI crawlers in robots.txt, and publish an llms.txt file.
  • Keep primary content in the initial HTML; do not rely on client-side rendering for the answer passage.
  • Maintain a consistent brand description across your site, social profiles, directories and press.

Authority level

  • Earn mentions and links from the publications Google already cites in your category.
  • Publish original data or research; it is the most reliably cited asset type.
  • Reclaim unlinked brand mentions so entity associations are explicit.

Prioritising which pages to optimise

You cannot rebuild every page at once. Rank opportunities with three questions.

  1. Does an AI Overview already appear for this query? If yes, the surface exists and the citation is winnable.
  2. Do we rank in the top ten, or close to it? If yes, retrieval is likely and the gap is passage quality.
  3. Is the query commercially valuable? Weight by pipeline, not only by volume.

Queries that score yes on all three go first. Then move to queries where you rank but no Overview exists yet, because Google expands coverage over time.

Measuring GEO

Track a fixed query set monthly and record, per query, whether an Overview appeared, whether you were cited, and who else was. Report citation share: the percentage of Overviews in the set that cite you. Benchmark it against three named competitors. Rankings alone will not show this movement, and click-through data from Search Console lags behind it.

The question is no longer "do we rank?" but "when Google answers, does it point at us?"

GEO and the rest of your programme

GEO is not a bolt-on. It relies on technical health, content quality and authority, the same pillars as classic SEO, and it pairs naturally with answer engine optimization for conversational assistants. That is why we run them as one programme inside our GEO service.

Frequently asked questions

What does GEO stand for?

GEO stands for generative engine optimization: optimising content so generative AI search features, chiefly Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, select it as a cited source when composing answers.

Is GEO the same as AEO?

They overlap but target different surfaces. GEO focuses on generative summaries inside search engines. Answer engine optimization (AEO) focuses on conversational assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude.

Does schema markup help with AI Overviews?

Schema does not guarantee a citation, but Organization, Article, FAQ and Person markup make it easier for systems to identify who wrote the content and what it is about, which supports selection.

Can small sites win AI Overview citations?

Yes. AI Overviews frequently cite specialist pages that answer a narrow question exceptionally well, even when larger sites outrank them for broader terms.
